'Unbound Frequencies' showcases new composer-performer works from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music's Interactive Composition community. Exploring synthesis, audiovisual performance, spatial sound, and experimental music practices, the programme traverses immersive sonic environments, live electronic performance, and investigations of frequency, resonance, and space. Together, these works reveal diverse approaches to contemporary composition at the intersection of music, technology, and art.

Experience the immersive sounds of Cave Song, spelunking into the mysterious realms of caves, myth and music.

In this evocative new musical work, Karen Berger, Kate Neal and Anthony Lyons explore the paradox that darkness can be a medium of vision and descent can be a movement towards revelation. Cave Song compositions juxtapose live, recorded and manipulated voices, including interviews and original writing, with rarely heard instruments: the deep tones of the contraforte bassoon, the unique Buchla music easel synthesiser, and the extraordinary resonance of stalactites. Instrumental and recorded sounds are interwoven with live foley and live and recorded text in unusual ways, creating moments where it becomes unclear what is live and what is recorded—at times engendering a feeling that the earth herself is speaking.

Audiences experience a five-part journey: The Call, The Search, The Struggle, The Breakthrough and The Return – into the earth, and into deep time, inviting reflection on the question: Are we being good ancestors?

Linking the local to the global, prerecorded interviews include comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell; imminent Indigenous scholar Professor Lynette Russell; Gunditjmara man Tom Molyneux; Djaara Elders; historian Barry Golding; geologist Clive Willman; ecologist Gidja Walker, and other community members.

Cave Song began as a creative development in the David Li Sound Gallery in early 2025, when Berger, Neal and Lyons were awarded an MPAC Progress Links commission, forging connections between artists and Monash University researchers to develop new art.

“Signals is a collection of audio compositions by Australian composer and sound artist Anthony Lyons that explore sound as a conduit for place, memory, and hidden connection. Drawing on field recordings, historical archives, analogue synthesis, and bio-electrical signals from living environments, the album listens closely to the traces and interferences that shape how we inhabit the world. Bells echo through locked-down towns, prison songs fracture into pulse and grain, sacred caves hum with technological intrusion, and forests and islands speak through layered sonic gestures. Across the album, the Buchla Music Easel and modular synthesis weave through these environments, binding the organic and electronic into a shared sonic language. Signals listens for what is often overlooked: the hidden infrastructures of sound, the rhythms and resonances of place, the fragile connections between environment, technology, and human presence. Concealed patterns, whispers, and hums of the world are drawn into focus—amplified, reshaped, and heard anew.”

OVERDRIVE is a festival for experimental electronic music and multimedia art in the heart of Manhattan. The festival presents multichannel electroacoustic compositions, interactive performances, and ensembles with live electronics, alongside video artworks, sculptural and sonic installations. This concert and screening includes works from artists: Janet Biggs, Noise Catalogue, Zorica Colic, Anthony Lyons & Paul Fletcher, Michał Sieczka, Tobias Fandel.

Created by Karen Berger, Anthony Lyons and Kate Neal, Underland is an immersive sonic journey into the hidden worlds beneath our feet. Drawing from field recordings, deep-listening practice and site-specific sound design, the work reimagines the underground as a living, breathing space — full of resonance, memory and movement. Audiences are invited to close their eyes and travel through layers of sound that evoke soil, roots, stone and subterranean water. Part meditation, part environmental reflection, Underland invites us to listen differently — to notice what lies beneath and how the earth itself hums with quiet life. The creative team’s masterful handling of texture and tone transforms listening into something tactile and embodied. Presented in an intimate installation setting, this work offers a rare opportunity to step away from noise, enter deep time and sink into stillness – reminder that wonder often lives in the places we overlook.

The eviMus Festival is held in Saarbrücken, Germany, specifically at the KuBa – Kulturzentrum am EuroBahnhof. It is a festival focused on new music, including electroacoustic and visual music. It's wonderful to have 'Capillary Motions' - an new audiovisual work by Anthony Lyons & Paul Fletcher included in the programme.

'Cosmos' by Anthony Lyons (sound) & Paul Fletcher (visual) is one of 10 selected audiovisual installation works to be featured specifically for the Immersive Room at the Portuguese National Museum of Music and part of the Sounds in Museums International Conference at Mafra Portugal 17-19 October 2025. Experience these immersive works across 4 large screens and 24 speakers taking full advantage of the space's distinctive audio and video technologies.

SonoTactile is an evening dedicated to exploring the tangible dimensions of sound. Through innovative and unconventional methods, it celebrates the tactile nature of musical instruments and the embodied experience of performance. These composer-performers reimagine musical engagement, extending beyond traditional approaches to create immersive, multisensory experiences. This concert reflects the evolving dynamics of contemporary music practices by foregrounding the sensory and immersive aspects of these works. It invites deeper audience engagement through visually and sonically compelling performances, showcasing a forward-thinking integration of cutting-edge technologies which underlines the Interactive Composition department’s commitment to advancing music composition and performance.

The event features contributions from the department’s staff, late-stage doctoral candidates, and recent PhD graduates, whose expertise spans diverse areas, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, gestural music, vector synthesis, immersive performance, and DJing. Using multimedia and interactive experiences, the works presented extend the boundaries of academic and modern music through both improvisational, real-time creations and fixed compositions. This program highlights the breadth and interdisciplinary nature of interactive music practitioners within the Australian experimental music scene, offering a platform for innovation at the intersection of technology, creativity, and performance.

Glass and Fans: Spatial Infra-Instrument Framework is an installation that explores the entangled relationships between technology, creativity, accessibility, and participation through Glass and Fans, two interactive spatial sound installations developed using the Spatial Infra-Instrument Framework (SIF). Rooted in Percy Grainger’s vision to “blur the distinctions between performance, composition, and listening”, SIF transforms everyday materials—such as glass and fans—into versatile instruments, enabling participatory engagement for composers, performers, and the public, regardless of prior musical or technical experience.

Anthony Lyons and Paul Fletcher, collectively known as AntPaul Projects, deliver immersive live performances that seamlessly blend experimental soundscapes with dynamic visual artistry. As part of their activation in this evening at Rochester Shire Hall they will demonstrate their innovations such as transforming plant energy into interactive audio-visual experiences. They will combine live audio-visual compositions with abstract animations, creating a sensory journey that explores the interplay between organic forms and digital media. Their work invites audiences to engage deeply, fostering a unique connection between the performers, the art and the viewers.

MPAC invites you to a creative work in development presentation of Cave Song on Friday 21 February at 1.30pm-2.45pm in the David Li Sound Gallery.

Cave Song explores the ways caves, music-making and spirituality have richly interacted over the millennia. For most cultures, music’s ability to express the inexpressible has made it the perfect bridge between matter and spirit. Caves, too, have been seen as places for spiritual development, separate from the everyday world, and playing music or singing inside them can provide an expansive feeling of acoustic luminosity. Using the extraordinary capabilities of the Meyer Active Acoustic Constellation sound system, we transport our audience across time and space, touching on questions about the mysteries of who we truly are.

A half hour performance (approx) will be followed by an informal Q&A with wine and nibbles.

An Evening of Experimental Music with Anthony Lyons, Matt Warren and Matthew Magnus.

The SOUND/IMAGE audiovisual festival brings together international artists and experts exploring the relationship between sounds and images, and the images which sounds can construct by themselves. The festival delivers a rich programme of complementary talks, screenings, loudspeaker orchestra concerts, and performances – bringing together composers, filmmakers, electronic musicians, live visual performers, researchers from all over the world to stimulate discussion, debate and engage diverse perspectives and new insights on sound and audiovisual practice. Selected as one of the performed works is 'Between Earth and Sky' (Bundanon) by Anthony Lyons - a fixed media, multi-channel spatialised sound work. The work was written as a reflection on the land and spirit of the location Bundanon on the Shoalhaven river, NSW, Australia.

A performance, collaboration and talk at (CMRC) Contemporary Music Research Centre, Athens Conservatoire, Greece. Really looking forward to playing with Schema Musicalis (Stelios Giannoulakis) on the Synthi 100, as well as playing the buchla easel and talking about my practice.
