13th International Conference on The Inclusive Museum (2020)

 —  —

Museum of Lisbon, Portugal (available online), Lisbon, Portugal

Anthony Lyons giving a presentation (now virtual) for the 13th International Conference on The Inclusive Museum. The presentation is titled 'Composing the Museum' and looks at the process of engaging with Melbourne's Grainger Museum to sample Percy Grainger's unique tuned-percussion collection to make new digital Grainger instruments for creative use and expanded access. This talk specifically discusses the Living Instruments project and the process of digitally preserving the sound of the fragile Grainger instrument collection and presenting a way of transforming the relationship between musical artefacts/objects and their cultural value with a diverse group of people including contemporary makers. In 'Composing the Museum', creativity and the making of new work are situated as centrally important to linking the past, present, and future of museum collections.

New Release - Cities and Memory

Included with the release of this fascinating album is the piece 'Piombino' by Anthony Lyons which is part of a collection of compositions built from field recordings of the global Covid-19 lockdown. Assembled for the #StayHomeSounds project by Cities and Memory, in which artists reflected on the lockdown and reimagine its sounds. You can listen/purchase the album at: https://citiesandmemory.bandcamp.com/album/remixing-the-global-lockdown

Fabric Culture is an interdisciplinary collaboration project, between the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music and the Grainger Museum. Through sound and vision, patterns and threads of cultural connection are traced in the exhibition, featuring work by academics and students from the Faculty. Major new commissioned works by Anthony Lyons and Paul Fletcher allow visitors to interact with and be immersed in an audiovisual sculptural space. The exhibition also showcases a new collaborative audiovisual work, "Pattern Loops" recently created by MCM Interactive Composition and VCA Animation students in response to the ideas, patterns and clothing designs of Percy and Ella Grainger.
