How might digital instrument collections influence the future of music and sound-making?
The Grainger Museum is transforming historically rare and unique instruments into interactive and playable virtual instruments. The Living Instruments project – a collaboration with the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Music and Melbourne eResearch Group, School of Computing & Information Systems – involves mapping real instruments (by sampling their sound) to new tactile digital interfaces that anyone can use.
During this official launch of the Living Instruments digital platform, learn about the preservation practices and cultural value of the Grainger Museum’s remarkable musical instrument collection. Experts who have contributed to the project will share insights about playing, composing and curating the instruments, through to research and software development.
After the discussion, discover and interact with the playable virtual instruments first-hand. Speakers: Dr Anthony Lyons, Dr Heather Gaunt, Abdul Rehman Mohammad

The music of the V/line train and Calder Fwy trip, once so familiar yet made almost a memory in the events of 2020, will be brought back to life in a live performance of new music for piano, cello and electronics. Featuring pianist Josh Cohen who has garnered millions of YouTube views for his meditative and highly improvised approach to playing will be joined by Sydney based cellist Emily Williams and electronic composers and Newstead sound producers Aimee Chapman and Anthony Lyons in a mesmerising musical observation of Coming Home
The Isolation Improvisation Collective (IIC) invites you to a live-streamed, multi-disciplinary event comprising musicians, artists, dancers, poets, animators and other creatives with a shared passion for innovation and experimentation. Formed in a direct response to the COVID-19-imposed lockdown, the group has met regularly over the past months to explore the possibility of community and cooperation online, developing new tools, methods and a shared improvisational vocabulary.
During this interactive event, you’ll be invited to re-think the limitations and possibilities of online collaboration, playing with the idiosyncrasies of the virtual—such as lag-times and glitch—as creative parameters, rather than barriers to communication. With the performance hinging on a spontaneous dialogue between participants, each performer’s contribution to the piece will allow them to re-connect with other members of the collective. The result will be a totally unique work—something increasingly rare in this age of documentation and digital reproduction—and a re-defining of what ‘live’ performance can mean in a virtual space.

Museum of Lisbon, Portugal (available online), Lisbon, Portugal
Anthony Lyons giving a presentation (now virtual) for the 13th International Conference on The Inclusive Museum. The presentation is titled 'Composing the Museum' and looks at the process of engaging with Melbourne's Grainger Museum to sample Percy Grainger's unique tuned-percussion collection to make new digital Grainger instruments for creative use and expanded access. This talk specifically discusses the Living Instruments project and the process of digitally preserving the sound of the fragile Grainger instrument collection and presenting a way of transforming the relationship between musical artefacts/objects and their cultural value with a diverse group of people including contemporary makers. In 'Composing the Museum', creativity and the making of new work are situated as centrally important to linking the past, present, and future of museum collections.
Included with the release of this fascinating album is the piece 'Piombino' by Anthony Lyons which is part of a collection of compositions built from field recordings of the global Covid-19 lockdown. Assembled for the #StayHomeSounds project by Cities and Memory, in which artists reflected on the lockdown and reimagine its sounds. You can listen/purchase the album at: https://citiesandmemory.bandcamp.com/album/remixing-the-global-lockdown
