The festival delivers a rich programme of complementary talks, screenings, loudspeaker orchestra concerts, and performances – bringing together composers, filmmakers, electronic musicians, live visual performers, researchers from all over the world to stimulate discussion, debate and engage diverse perspectives and new insights on sound and audiovisual practice. Selected as one of the performed works is Bundanon by Anthony Lyons - a fixed media, multi-channel spatialised sound work.
"A stunning, imaginative and mesmerising sound world by two exceptional artists."

About the artists

Au Revoir Hands fuse cello and buchla easel synth, exploring the worlds of experimental ambient and contemporary neo-classical music. Cello and analogue synth lines meet fragments of noise, broken and reframed beats, underpinned by samples of viola da gamba, harp and strings.

About the concert

The duo’s performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents original works from their album Hemispheres, exploring concepts of navigation and voyage. An immersive sound world sitting at the intersections of neo-classical, soundscape and electronics.

Hemispheres is a rich tapestry of musical sound forged from the layering of melodic cello, analogue synthesizers, electronic atmospheres and ambient rhythms. A deeply immersive and expansive concert experience, Hemispheres invites a momentary pause to look out beyond the forces that push and pull us.

‘Created across our northern and southern hemispheres, the album furnishes a program that embraces themes of nautical voyages, ocean channel crossings, time, tide, and celestial navigation.’ Au Revoir Hands on Hemispheres
alyonsmusic.comtag:alyonsmusic.com,2005:Post/68077692021-11-13T14:07:10+11:002021-11-13T14:08:08+11:00Hemispheres album now available!!

Mara KORPER written and directed by Jayde Kirchert, with composition by Anthony Lyons. Presented by Citizen Theatre enter a feminist sci-fi spectacle that follows in the footsteps of dystopian classics such as Handmaid’s Tale, Brave New World and 1984.

Mara KORPER is set in a futuristic, dystopian world where gender is obsolete, the flesh must remain whole, and bodies are owned by the government. This brilliant and terrifying new theatrical work explores themes of extremism, corruption, gender and body image. Mara KORPER is staged in a non-traditional way, seating audiences in the round in private perspex boxes. Fusing the latest sound technology with absurdist expressionism, Mara KORPER is truly on the cutting edge of experimental feminist theatre.
alyonsmusic.comtag:alyonsmusic.com,2005:Post/65854652021-03-26T23:08:35+11:002021-03-26T23:08:35+11:00Melbourne Knowledge Week: Living Instruments
How might digital instrument collections influence the future of music and sound-making?

The presentation is titled 'Composing the Museum' and looks at the process of engaging with Melbourne's Grainger Museum to sample Percy Grainger's unique tuned-percussion collection to make new digital Grainger instruments for creative use and expanded access. This talk specifically discusses the Living Instruments project and the process of digitally preserving the sound of the fragile Grainger instrument collection and presenting a way of transforming the relationship between musical artefacts/objects and their cultural value with a diverse group of people including contemporary makers. In 'Composing the Museum', creativity and the making of new work are situated as centrally important to linking the past, present, and future of museum collections.
The program takes as its point of departure the music and ideas of autodidactic Australian composer and polymath Percy Grainger, specifically his sense of ‘freedom’ expressed in the works and experiments that he called free music. In a series of specially commissioned performances utilising Grainger’s recently rebuilt free music ‘machines’, a group of artists and musicians offer their own multifaceted readings of Grainger’s ‘freedom’, including new sound sculpture installation work by Anthony Lyons and Paul Fletcher.

Some of the samples from this session will go towards a sound sculpture installation with Paul Fletcher for Nite Art 2017 at the Grainger Museum, Melbourne on the 27th July, 6pm-10pm.

From ‘Eighteen Hammers’ to ‘No More My Lawd’, these songs are a moving portrait of prison life, and defiant statements of hope and unity in the face of appalling conditions. Here, 30 sound artists from as far afield as Brazil, Turkey, Australia and the USA bring their own lives and experiences to bear on reimagining these songs."

This was to celebrate 100 years since the founding of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, and the beginning of Dada. My work takes a 5-minute field recording I made of Melbourne’s iconic Luna Park and surrounds, with a reimagined version of this recording that uses Dada techniques of reassemble and abstraction. Very happy to have been able to contribute to this wonderful global mapping project through Dada Sounds. The songs are beautifully crafted, intelligent pop full of strong melodies, interesting harmonic changes and alluring electronic and production values. I’m not surprised they are starting to get so much positive attention from reviewers and bloggers around the world.
“I was lucky enough to see both the rehearsal run and the performance of a highly ambitious and truly engaging presentation of new works on Sunday. Titled ‘Piano Between Fingers and Electronic Transformation’ it featured the works of two Melbourne based composers Anthony Lyons and Steve Adam who composed pieces for solo piano and computer technology, and who for the past year have been devising work in close consultation with the pianist at the centre of the performance - Sonja Lifschitz.
It was entrancing, so often the fusion between organic and electronic can be forced and insincere- creating 2 separate sound sources that divide and confuse the listening experience. However in the case of this performance they were entwined with subtle beauty, each allowing the other to take focus or to support. Lifschitz in both her technical prowess and her commanding presence and focus in what was a demanding 70 minutes of playing was mesmerizing.”

There is a bit of time to wander around this beautiful city of Copenhagen – also a train up to Helsignor to see where Shakespeare’s Hamlet was set, a quick visit to the Carlsberg factory, then a catch-up and de-brief with Anders in the afternoon. Very sad to be leaving tomorrow but I leave so inspired by the positive experience of the Bach/Lyons Project. We next plan to perform our work with the project in Australia in February/March 2012. Such beautiful weather here in Copenhagen. Literaturhaus turns out to be a beautiful venue for us, nice high ceilings, wooden floor, grand piano – it once was a church.

The performance goes superbly. The hard work over the past four days pays off and Anders, I and the rest of Bach/Lyons musicians enjoy a great gig, really sitting in the music nicely – up there with my most enjoyable performances ever! A really warm and enthusiastic reaction from the audience as well – can’t wait to do this again, as well as write and collaborate on new material for it.

Kandinsky’s abstract painting, full of coloured circles against a dark background seemed to me like a snapshot of the cosmos or a nebulae full of rotating stars and planets.

Program note

Quelques Cercles (several circles) takes its title and broad inspiration from a painting by Vassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky’s abstract painting, full of coloured circles against a dark background seemed to me like a snapshot of the cosmos or a nebulae full of rotating stars and planets. A postcard of the work had been sitting on my desk since I picked it up from a Kandinsky exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in 2009. In the early stages of this composition it became apparent that the music was developing with some parallels to Kandinsky’s circular images that shared my working space.

The orchestral work Quelques Cercles is underpinned by a passacaglia figure and this is repeated throughout the work in various forms and colourations – moving around a pitch cycle until it finally returns to the original pitch centre. The passacaglia figure, first heard in the cellos, also provides much of the melodic and motif material for the work. It is put through various modal and chromatic harmonic filtering to bring out different colours with its repetitions. The middle section of the piece is based on the first four notes of the passacaglia figure and this is elongated over a pedal-point texture – forming an inner circle within the larger circular structure.

The work also utilises pulse. This moves between the foreground and background musical textures and functions as an additional circular element overall. The pulse figures are based on quavers in three’s and two’s (derived from the 7/8, 5/8 section of the work). The 7/8, 5/8 pulses are at times superimposed within the crotchet based parts of the piece providing a sense of syncopation and overlapping metres – a little like the overlapping circles in Kandinsky’s painting.

The blog makes mention of the Pure Poetry Project and quotes some of my comments published in Resonate regarding the process of collaboration between music and poetry for the 2011 Pure Poetry Project. Have a read of whisperinggums musings, there are some really interesting comments as well as mentions of other Australian poets, composers and ensembles, including Bruce Dawe, Les Murray, Andrew Ford and The Song Company. Here is a link.
alyonsmusic.comtag:alyonsmusic.com,2005:Post/59989672011-05-24T10:00:00+10:002011-11-09T00:13:20+11:00Review in the Ballarat Courier
A little review of the Pure Poetry event by Thomas McIlroy was published today in the Ballarat Courier. We had a full house and enjoyed great performances of new works. The night was also recorded by ABC Radio. This photo was taken after the performance and from left to right you see: Lachlan Dent (cello), Emma Knight (flute), Me, and the brains behind the project - pianist and poet Bronwyn Blaikclock. Nathan Curnow, poet extraordinaire, reader, narrator and collaborator with me on the main work of the night (The last Chocolate Factory) must have been off getting a drink at this stage.
