SOUND/IMAGE FESTIVAL

 —  —

Bathway Theatre, University of Greenwich, London

The SOUND/IMAGE audiovisual festival brings together international artists and experts exploring the relationship between sounds and images, and the images which sounds can construct by themselves. The festival delivers a rich programme of complementary talks, screenings, loudspeaker orchestra concerts, and performances – bringing together composers, filmmakers, electronic musicians, live visual performers, researchers from all over the world to stimulate discussion, debate and engage diverse perspectives and new insights on sound and audiovisual practice. Selected as one of the performed works is 'Bundanon' by Anthony Lyons - a fixed media, multi-channel spatialised sound work. The work was written as a reflection on the land and spirit of the location Bundanon on the Shoalhaven river, NSW, Australia.

A performance, collaboration and talk at (CMRC) Contemporary Music Research Centre, Athens Conservatoire, Greece. Really looking forward to playing with Schema Musicalis (Stelios Giannoulakis) on the Synthi 100, as well as playing the buchla easel and talking about my practice. This Wednesday at 7pm, Athens Greece.

Casting Light Projecting Ripples

(AEST, UTC+10) (AEST, UTC+10)

Ionion Centre for Arts and Culture, Metaxata, Kefalonia, Greece

An audiovisual installation work by Australian composer/artist Anthony Lyons that is inspired by the light, foliage, rock and mirrored blue waters of Zervati Cave. Through a process of bio-mapping and re-imagination of the sounds, plant data, light and wave patterns of Zervati as they resonate onto and off the cave walls, this work captures moments of suspended beauty, emergent patterns and rhythmic processes through the interplay of light, shadow and sound.

'Casting Light Projecting Ripples' is an immersive installation integrating field-recordings, synthesis, plant sensors, and video. The work aspires to unveil fresh perspectives and direct attention toward UNESCO GeoPark sites — extraordinary realms of ecological significance and rare beauty.

Treasury Theatre, Treasury Theatre Lower Plaza, 1 Macarthur St, Melbourne VIC 3000

Screening at the 2023 Melbourne International Animation Festival is a collaborative audiovisual work called 'Remote Connections' that animator Paul Fletcher and Anthony Lyons did during the long lockdown periods of Covid. Generated from real-time improvisation over the internet, 'Remote Connections' captures a sense of the late night connections between sound, vision and spirit we sought across weekly meet-ups. Featuring buchla music easel and modular sounds, with Paul's exsquisite abstact animation, you can catch 'Remote Connections' as part of the Melbourner International Animation Festival where it is being shown as part of the Australian showcase, surveying "the incredible artistry and skill of Australian animators."

Program Notes

Some of the program notes for the composition works of Anthony Lyons are in the process of being added below.

Quelques Cercles - for orchestra

Premiered by The University of Melbourne Orchestra at the Melbourne Recital Centre 19th September, 2011.

Quelques Cercles (several circles) takes its title and broad inspiration from a painting by Vassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky’s abstract painting, full of coloured circles against a dark background seemed to me like a snapshot of the cosmos or a nebulae full of rotating stars and planets. A postcard of the work had been sitting on my desk since I picked it up from a Kandinsky exhibition at the Pompidou Centre in 2009. In the early stages of this composition it became apparent that the music was developing with some parallels to Kandinsky’s circular images that shared my working space.

The orchestral work Quelques Cercles is underpinned by a passacaglia figure and this is repeated throughout the work in various forms and colourations – moving around a pitch cycle until it finally returns to the original pitch centre. The passacaglia figure, first heard in the cellos, also provides much of the melodic and motif material for the work. It is put through various modal and chromatic harmonic filtering to bring out different colours with its repetitions. The middle section of the piece is based on the first four notes of the passacaglia figure and this is elongated over a pedal-point texture – forming an inner circle within the larger circular structure.

The work also utilises pulse. This moves between the foreground and background musical textures and functions as an additional circular element overall. The pulse figures are based on quavers in three’s and two’s (derived from the 7/8, 5/8 section of the work). The 7/8, 5/8 pulses are at times superimposed within the crotchet based parts of the piece providing a sense of syncopation and overlapping metres – a little like the overlapping circles in Kandinsky’s painting.

Anthony Lyons, September 2011
