Composing the Museum

A presentation (now virtual) for the 13th International Conference on The Inclusive Museum (3-5 September, Museum of Lisbon, Portugal). The presentation is titled 'Composing the Museum' and looks at the process of engaging with Melbourne's Grainger Museum to sample Percy Grainger's unique tuned-percussion collection to make new digital Grainger instruments for creative use and expanded access. This talk specifically discusses the Living Instruments project and the process of digitally preserving the sound of the fragile Grainger instrument collection and presenting a way of transforming the relationship between musical artefacts/objects and their cultural value with a diverse group of people including contemporary makers. In 'Composing the Museum', creativity and the making of new work are situated as centrally important to linking the past, present, and future of museum collections. More info here
